What we do

Our Environment Team is dedicated to ensuring that our events are delivered in an environmentally responsible way. Their goal is to drive positive change in environmental sustainability through our actions and to inspire our participants, stakeholders and partners to do the same.

How we are reducing our carbon emissions

Using hydrotreated vegetable oil in our baggage lorries at the TCS London Marathon (as well as in generators at all our other events)

Rolling out a personalised travel planning tool to encourage low-carbon travel by participants and spectators across all our events

Incentivising volunteers to reuse uniform from previous events to cut down on new apparel

Removed beef from all our menus

Here’s how we have lowered our environmental impact

Participant choice

Our participants can choose whether they would like an event T-shirt or to have a tree planted for them instead. In 2025, 9.14% of participants across all our events chose a Tree not a Tee (16,166 trees planted).

Medals & Tees

In 2024 and 2025 all our medals were made from 100% recycled zinc with a recycled polyester lanyard. 55% of T-shirts/apparel was made from recycled polyester.

Kitbags and cups

Kitbags are made from 75% sugarcane. All cups used at events are compostable.

Banners

Our banner roll branding is made from recycled polyester and if a sponsor changes or rebrands we send it to be recycled in the UK back into plastic pellets (to be made into new products).

Tackling waste

We try to eliminate waste where possible – for example, no foil blankets were given out at the 2025 TCS London Marathon or the 2025 Brighton Marathon – and try to segregate and recycle as much as we can. Our staffed recycling stations at all events help to improve recycling and recovery rates.

In 2024 we diverted 47 per cent of waste from incineration or landfill (it was reused, recycled or composted).  Across all our events we collected 98.5 tonnes of waste - equating to 0.62kg of waste per participant.

We’ve introduced

Water Refill Stations

In 2024 we added Water Refill Stations to the courses of our four largest events, to encourage participants to carry their own water and help cut down on plastic waste.

In 2025 we increased the number of Water Refill Stations along the routes of the GetPRO Bath Half, Brighton Marathon, TCS London Marathon, and The Big Half. An average of 32% of participants across our events wear a hydration vest, a bottle belt, or carry a reusable drinks bottle.

What happens to clothes left at the Start Line? This partnership is giving them new life

Thanks to a partnership between The Salvation Army Trading Company and London Marathon Events, those clothes are being collected, sorted, and given a second life.

The philosophy behind Team Green and how that impacts us and our planet was key. Global challenges like food insecurity, economic barriers, and environmental stressors, including deforestation, are of grave concern. I want my children to live in a safe and healthy world with greenery. Team Green did a good job of reminding us to do so.
